Making your Own Moonshine is Easier than you Think!

While fermenting food is not a new concept, the origins of modern moonshining lie in the birth of the United States. Early pioneers (especially those in grain-producing states) discovered their corn was worth far more once it was fermented and distilled into whiskey.

Of course, it wasn’t long before the government stepped in to implement a whiskey tax in order to recoup some of the costs of the American Revolution. With this Whiskey Tax (and subsequent uprising) moonshining became illegal, which it still is to this day.

The Right Equipment for the Job

In general, there are two different kinds of moonshiners. The ones who want to infuse their moonshine to make flavored liquors (like this recipe) and the ones who want to produce a quality whiskey for sippin'.

We know that no two 'shiners are alike so we produce a range of stills for every user. If you want to make quality spirits in the easiest (and cheapest!) way possible, sugar shine is a great way to go.

All you need to make this type of moonshine is a small bag of sugar, water, yeast and our Mist 1 Gallon Air Still. This is literally the cheapest and easiest way to make moonshine. It is the perfect base for all of our flavor infusions and is an economical way to fill up your bar with some quality cocktail ingredients.

For those who want to create a higher quality white whiskey (or burboun, brandy, rye or scotch) an all in one kit, like our Blue Ridge Stovetop Still, is the way to go. The Blue Ridge Still is an easy to use all in one kit that acts as both a fermentor and a stove top still. There is no need to purchase an additional heat source this system is designed for gas or electric stoves. It also comes with its own hydrometer and water pump!

The Blue Ridge Stovetop Still is easy to assemble and operate and yet creates high quality spirits from the comforts of home.

Check out how simple it is to assemble as both a fermentor and a still in the video below.

Three Steps to Making Moonshine

Making your own moonshine is a three-step process. In essence, you are completing three science experiments using common ingredients to get your desired result.

The first step is to cook your mash. This is a simple process in which you cook your mash ingredients (usually simple grains, or fruit) to convert the starches into fermentable sugars.

The second step is fermentation. This step is when yeast is added. Yeast works to convert your fermentable sugars into alcohol. This process takes on average between 7 and 14 days.

The third step is distillation. This process heats up your mash to separate the alcohol from the water in your mixture. A still works because alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water. By heating up your mixture in a still, the alcohol will turn into steam and then be chilled with a condenser.

Ingredients for Apple Pie Moonshine

  • 750 ml of moonshine
  • 1 cup of Spiced Rum
  • 1 gallon of Apple Cider
  • 1 quart of Apple Juice
  • 3 cups of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • 10 cinnamon sticks
  1. In a large pot pour the apple juice and cider. Throw in the cinnamon sticks in the pot and bring to a mild simmer. Then add both the brown and white sugar.
  2. Stir the mixture slowly, until the sugar is dissolved. Once it is completely dissolved take the mixture off the heat and allow it to cool down. You want it to cool to room temperature, this should take a couple of hours.
  3. Once it is cooled down, you can add the moonshine and spiced rum to it.
You can mix it and store the mixture in mason jars. The recipe should make about 6 quartz.
  4. To give a bit more flavor, you can even put the cinnamon stick in the mason jar with the moonshine. Then store the moonshine to allow it to age and all the flavors to blend together.
