Moonshine has been steadily growing in popularity as it has become a mainstream hobby in recent years. From the very popular Moonshiners on Discovery Channel to the various brands of supermarket ‘moonshine’ hitting the shelves, it seems everyone wants to drink moonshine. Adding moonshine to your favorite recipe is a fun (and often cheaper) way to reimagine your favorite cocktail recipes.

How to Flavor Moonshine

Flavoring moonshine is a great way to recreate your favorite flavored liqueurs at home for a fraction of the price. Of course, there are different techniques you can use to achieve your desired flavor.

For a more subtle flavor, you can choose to use a special recipe mash. You can choose to do a fruit mash, honey, peanut butter or brown sugar recipe for a subtle hint of flavor.

You can also use a gin basket to add flavor during distillation. The Standard column still has a gin basket attachment that is perfect for adding spices or fruit flavor during distillation.

The Standard is a great option for those who want a high proof shine with a neutral taste perfect for flavoring.

Its electric base makes this still easy to operate, with copper mesh insert that strips away all of the nasty sulphur leaving you with nothing but great tasting shine.

The Standard is also able to act as a fermentor as well as as a distiller which not only saves you money, but also valuable storage space.

How to Make Cream of Coconut

This recipe calls for cream of coconut. While some areas will have this for sale, in many areas it can be hard to find and so you may have to make your cream of coconut from scratch as we had to.

While this was an extra step, it was extremely simple and quick so if you find you are unable to easily source Cream of Coconut, it’s certainly not a deal breaker on this recipe.

Cream of Coconut is not the same as coconut milk. Instead, cream of coconut is actually a simple syrup which is made with coconut milk and sugar instead of sugar and water, which makes up a traditional simple syrup.

It is also important to note Cream of Coconut and Coconut Cream are also two different items. With so many similar named items, it is important to double check your ingredients to avoid mucking this recipe up.

Ingredients

  • 1 can full-fat coconut milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • pinch of salt

Directions

This recipe really couldn’t be simpler. Just simmer the coconut milk, sugar and salt in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.

Now that you have your Cream of Coconut sorted, you can get ready to make your Jack Frost.

How to Make a Jack Frost

There are two different ways to make a Jack Frost. You can blend enough for you and a friend, or shake your ingredients over ice to make a perfect personal portion.

Blended Jack Frost

  • Flaked coconut for rimming glasses
  • 8 cups ice
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • ½ cup blue curacao
  • ½ cup moonshine
  • ½ cup cream of coconut

Instructions

No matter if you plan on serving your Jack Frost blended or shaken, the first step is to rim your glass with honey and then dip in sweetened coconut. Of course, this step is not completely necessary but it really elevates your drink.

Add all the ingredients to your blender and blend until you have reached your desired consistency. Pour into your rimmed glasses and enjoy your taste of the sun.
