Alright, if you are or ever were a root beer fan, then boy, do I have a recipe for you.
This Root Beer Moonshine recipe is the adult root beer beverage of your dreams. One sip and you’ll be transported back to drinking Dad’s Root Beer on the pier, only with that sharp alcoholic kick to finish it off.
Not too long ago, I tried Root Beer Beer for the first time. That is, a beer with the sweet flavour of my favourite soda. It was amazing, and it got me thinking… Why not try turning my favourite childhood beverage into another kind of alcoholic beverage I can enjoy with my friends on a Friday night.
It may come as a (sad) surprise, but no actual root beer is used in this recipe. Instead, root beer extract gives the moonshine its final sickly sweet flavour. If you can’t find it in a grocery store near you, there are plenty of options online.
Throw it in mason jars with a homemade label and you have your very own Root Beer to go!

How long does Root Beer Moonshine last?
Because of the high sugar and alcohol content in this moonshine recipe, the shelf life is pretty much forever. If you store the finished moonshine in a tightly covered jar (I like mason jars) unopened, they can last for up to two years if properly stored. Once opened, keep refrigerated for up to six months.
Not that you will be able to resist sipping on it!
Root Beer Moonshine also makes an excellent gift for your friends and family.
Go one step further with a homemade Root Beer Moonshine float!
Grab some classic vanilla ice cream and add a scoop or two in a glass with your moonshine. Grab a spoon or a straw and enjoy all year long. Talk about one perfect adult alcoholic treat!
Root Beer Moonshine Recipe
This root beer recipe is the tastiest moonshine to sip on in the summer! Root beer moonshine will dress up any summer cookout or help you relax with a refreshing beverage after a long day. Sip slowly though, because it’s a lot stronger than the root beer you were used to as a kid.
10 cups water
2.5 cups granulated sugar
0.5 cups brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
750 ml moonshine
Add water, sugars and vanilla extract to a large pot or crock pot.
Cover and cook on high for two hours, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat (or turn off crock pot) and stir in root beer extract.
Allow liquid to cool completely. Once the liquid has cooled, add in the moonshine.
Ladle the liquid into clear jars and seal tightly. Store in a cool dry place!
- Shake before drinking.
- Remember this is a strong alcohol drink and caution should be used when drinking. The alcohol makes this shelf stable but you can also store it in the refrigerator. The longer this drink sits, the better the flavor will be. 30 days is recommended.
- Pair it with some vanilla ice cream for a homemade, adult root beer float!
